George Roy Hill’s The Sting was one of the biggest movies of 1974, garnering 7 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Direction, and Best Costume Design, for Edith Head’s wonderful recreation of twenties US style.
Newman and Redford reprised a buddy act that had proved so popular in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, as grifters coming together to get revenge on Robert Shaw.
It has lasted really well, with not only those performances, but also a genuine feelgood factor, and that brilliant Marvin Hamlisch score, based on Scott Joplin’s ragtime tunes.
This is Lobby Card #5 from the set of 8 produced for the film’s original release, showing Redford in the barber’s chair while Newman looks on, as well as border artwork based on the main poster adverting imagery.
