Torn Curtain

By the mid 1960’s, Alfred Hitchcock’s films were thought to be getting a little too predictable.  But that was then, and when they are looked at now, they really aren’t far behind classic Hitchcock.

Torn Curtain paired two of the biggest box office stars of the day, Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, both making their only Hitchcock films.  It played on Cold War themes, with a story line about an American scientist, who was (or wasn’t, or was…..) planning to defect to East Germany.  It has plenty of typically Hitchcockian scenes and touches, and is worth a watch.

As with most of his 60’s output, the advertising materials featured Hitchcock himself as well as his stars, and this original US One Sheet poster includes him, as well as close ups of his two leads, separated by a symbolic knife, tearing them apart.
