Marlon Brando’s one film as director is usually seen as a flawed classic. Like the sole directorial effort from Charles Laughton (The Night of the Hunter), its reputation with the critics has improved with time, and the consensus now is that it’s a shame that neither actor directed more than a single film.
Stories abound of its long and troubled production, and of the studio taking the final edit out of Brando’s hands and forcing him to film a more Hollywood friendly happy ending.
But it’s still a great movie to watch, if a little uncomfortable at times, and probably revealing much about Brando’s own character.
And this original One Sheet poster features nice, if slightly out of character, artwork of Brando as a smiling Rio.
