Limelight

Chaplin returned to his music hall roots to make this bitter sweet romantic comedy drama.

With a memorable score, the film was a big hit in the UK, although in retrospect it probably has too much sermonising and talking, most of the time.

The best exception is the scene which coupled Chaplin with Buster Keaton for the only time, playing two old performers re-creating their past, in a hilarious silent sketch with just the two of them, a piano and a violin.
