The great Tony Hancock had his first cinematic starring role in 1961’s The Rebel. Written by Galton and Simpson, it was pretty much Hancock as we knew him from the tv, albeit without Sid, Bill and Hattie.
It is a very funny film, lightly poking fun at art and pretentiousness. A big commercial hit in Britain, but not so elsewhere, including the US, a market that Hancock was determined to crack.
This is an original US Lobby Card from that US release, where it was re-titled as Call Me Genius. It is Card #7 from the set of 8, and is a nice depiction of Tony working on his interpretation of Irene Handl, and also features the fun main poster artwork in its border.
