Very loosely based on the book Karen Blixen wrote about her time in Africa, the 1985 Sydney Pollack directed Out of Africa starred Meryl Streep (Karen Blixen), Robert Redford (Denys Finch Hatton) and Klaus Maria Brandauer (Bror Blixen).
Set in the first part of the 20th century in British Colonial East Africa, the film won 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and tells the story of a young Danish woman who moves to the country we now know as Kenya to marry a Swedish nobleman.
Although it is a marriage of convenience they buy land, establish a coffee plantation and become part of colonial life, until handsome adventurer Denys (Redford) arrives and Karen finds true love.
These original release UK lobby cards for the film are unusual in that they feature artwork from the main poster campaign on one side and a scene from the film on the other. In general this way of designing the cards to feature a combination of poster artwork and a scene is rarely found on the more modern cards.
This card shows Karen and Denys enjoying a picnic.
