Today is Paul McCartney’s 79th birthday.

One of the greatest and most popular musicians of our time, and indeed of all time, his music already spans nearly sixty years, from Love Me Do, the first single released by the Beatles, to McCartney III, his lockdown album released last year.

He’s also made his mark at the cinema, from composing scores (The Family Way) to writing theme songs (Live and Let Die) to producing animation (Rupert and more) to appearing on screen, both with the other Beatles and by himself.

So while we wait for Peter Jackson’s video re-working of the Let It Be sessions and McCartney’s next album, have a look at some original cinema posters and lobby cards and join us in wishing a Happy Birthday to Sir Paul McCartney.

In all the excitement of doing nothing in lockdown, we failed to mention that it would have been Katharine Hepburn’s birthday on 12th May.

One of Hollywood’s true greats, and a real mould breaker in many ways.

Her career was long and broad, spanning the thirties to the nineties, so it is perhaps a case of too many to mention.

But we must just refer to our favourites, the screwball comedy of Bringing Up Baby, the romantic comedy of The Philadelphia Story, and the series of pairings with Spencer Tracy.

A new BBC 2 documentary last night provided a good reminder of the comedy talents of Peter Sellers. It follows his career from the Army’s Gang Show, through the Goons on the radio, to British comedies of the fifties and then on to Hollywood superstardom.

For many people, he will always be the accident prone Inspector Clouseau of the popular Pink Panther series. But this programme served as a reminder that he was much more than that, with some memorable performances including Fred Kite and Chance the gardener (his only Oscar nomination).

Fortunately, his films are well represented amongst the most collectable original film posters and lobby cards.

The Pink Panther movies have very collectable posters and cards, but probably the most sought after posters in Sellers starring vehicles are The Party (with great Jack Davis artwork) and Kubrick’s Dr Strangeleove, with an iconic poster courtesy of Tomi Ungerer.

As with his 80th birthday a decade ago, Clint Eastwood is keeping a low profile ahead of his 90th birthday, and dodging all the attempts to Make His Day or ask him if he Feels Lucky. Still producing and directing, and starring most recently in The Mule, his career to date spans six and a half decades. From early tv, to Rawhide, to the classic spaghetti westerns, US westerns, war movies, light comedy, the iconic Dirty Harry Callahan, and the more recent and Oscar winning turns behind as well as in front of the camera.

And for collectors of original movie posters and lobby cards, Clint has featured in some of the most collectable since the sixties, especially the Leone titles and the Dirty Harry outings. but there are many more to choose from.
