When uptight American millionaire industrialist, Wendell Armbruster Jr. (Jack Lemmon), arrives in Italy to repatriate the body of his father who has been killed in a car crash he meets a young English girl, Pamela Piggott (Juliet Mills), who is also in Italy because her mother has died in a car accident.
They find out the parents were lovers and had died together in the same car crash. Each reacts to the discovery of the long-standing affair differently, but while making arrangements for the repatriations of the bodies Wendell and Pamela end up embarking on a love affair themselves.
