Starting life as a small Gallery within the world renowned Antiquarius Antiques Centre in Chelsea, London, Limelight Movie Art has been selling original, vintage movie art to film lovers, collectors, designers and families for nearly 20 years, and many of our clients have been with us since those early days. But our personal affection for cinema posters started much earlier.
Like many teenagers in the 70’s and 80’s, cinema played a huge part in Andy’s social life, enjoying classics such as Jaws, The Godfather and the latest James Bond outings. And even earlier than that he had always enjoyed the black and white comedy classics including Chaplin, the Marx Brothers and Laurel and Hardy that were regularly shown on tv in the days before video or DVD, as well as queuing up outside his local cinema to see the latest Jerry Lewis or Carry On outing. This love of film eventually saw him going to a small local movie collectors’ fair one weekend. To his amazement, he discovered that he could purchase original, iconic posters that had actually been used in the cinemas when his favourite films first played. He was hooked from then, and he started to collect original posters for his favourite films, stars and directors, which over the years have proudly adorned the walls of his university rooms, homes and offices. The passion which led to Limelight Movie Art had begun.
While Susan doesn’t necessarily love Jaws or The Godfather, her love of original movie posters developed as she saw the amazing artwork produced for some of her favourite classic films, such as Harvey and screwball comedy, Bringing Up Baby. She particularly likes to collect the Lobby Cards for these early films, which combined elements of the poster artwork with scenes from the films
There is something extremely special about the way a piece of movie art can transport you to a time or place, conjuring up that feeling or memory of seeing something exciting, new and brilliant for the first time. It’s a feeling we still love to experience and share today. Displaying an original poster has for many people a particular emotional resonance with a time or a place or a person or an occasion. Others enjoy owning something that is authentic and rare. Some just buy posters because they love the artwork or the actors who feature. And very often it is a combination of these factors which together make the piece so special.
After collecting privately for over 40 years, and seeing the prices increase as more and more people started to collect, in 2004 we saw a fantastic opportunity to share our enthusiasm with more people, combining the hobby of collecting these wonderful pieces of history with distinctive home decoration to create personal art with emotional resonance.
Today, our stock changes constantly and we have one of the largest inventories in the United Kingdom. Some of our original pieces are 100 years old, many are from the Golden Age of Hollywood, but we also usually have the most recent 007 outing and we always offer a wide range of titles and sizes with all the iconic components.
As things get older, they need a little more care and attention. It is our mission to preserve and provide the highest quality original movie art available, which is why so many of our art pieces have been cared for with museum quality conservation, including stabilisation and linen backed conservation using reversible techniques, whilst only ever carrying out the bare minimum, if any, restoration. We also offer conservation quality custom framing to protect your purchase and ensure the brightest, freshest display for your home or collection, without affecting the tactile authenticity of the art.
A lawyer by profession and a keen veteran footballer, tennis player, white collar boxer and promoter, he has been a lover of cinema for longer than he can remember. Never one to be shy of a camera, and with various tv and film appearances on his CV, he’s also enjoying his “to camera” pieces in which he describes some of the joys, quirks and details of original film poster collecting, choosing and displaying.
As a qualified garden designer and with a background in interior design, she enjoys combining her love of film with an aesthetic approach to what will look good where, and helping clients to find just the right piece for them.
