1978 was the summer of Grease. The film adaptation of the successful California high school based musical was massively hyped in the spring and early summer. The singles charts were backed up with hits by the cast, including John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, both singly and together. The vinyl double album was played endlessly.
And when the movie arrived, it probably exceeded expectations, and was the hit of the summer. From the new Barry Gibb via Frankie Valli theme song accompanying the cartoon opening, right through to the ascent into the skies, it moved from hit to hit, laugh to laugh.
As well as the mature looking high school kids, played by Travolta, Newton John, Stockard Channing and Jeff Conaway to name a few, there were also some great names from the golden age of Hollywood and the first decade of tv. Look out for Eve Arden, Joan Blondell and Sid Caesar.
Long since a cult movie, it’s constantly revived and re-issued, and celebrated on its anniversaries. So original cinema advertising and marketing materials are very collectable, and posters and lobby cards from the original release are becoming harder to come by.
This original lobby card is Card #8 from the set of 8 showing the Pink Ladies with Frankie Avalon.
